The r-word means “retard” and it’s in the news again
The major Superbowl controversy this year had nothing to do with the game.
Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco used the word “retarded” to describe the decision to hold next year’s Superbowl outside in the cold weather. He said, “I think it’s retarded. I probably shouldn’t say that. I think it’s stupid. If you want a Super Bowl, put a retractable dome on your stadium.”
Granted, the comment doesn’t make him the next Shakespeare. But, the tidal wave of criticism and analysis that followed was truly bewildering. He’s a football player who talked clumsily about the weather – not a football player calling a five-year old with Down Syndrome “retarded”.
Dare I say it? (Yes, I will.) This is a whole lotta hoopla over nothing. The man apologized.
Find out why I’m not banning the word “retard” and if you want to do something real to help the disabled – rather than uselessly banning words – read 5 simple ways you can help the disabled.

The correct term is Down syndrome, not Dows syndrome. Maybe you don't mind if your kids hear the word retard thrown around, but people with a plethora if disabilities are offended by the word. It isn't about personal thoughts on the use of the word, but rather how those who live the slur feel.
I see you misspelled my version. Mistakes can happen to anyone even football players. I will change the spelling above. In regards to the rest of your comment: I do live with it. Look around. What is this blog about?
And if it was a slur that would be one thing, but it wasn't. Context is everything.
AND, he corrected himself. He knows it's not an appropriate word to say, but some habits die hard. I know "retarded" and "gypsy" are bad words now, but they still sometimes slip out, even tho I try to censor myself.
I am with you, I think this is a whole lot of nonsense. Yes, I understand this isn't a pleasant term to be thrown at person but that isn't what happened. I swear it feels like some people look for reasons to be offended.
