Five completely stupid and totally irresponsible excuses

It’s been two weeks since the so-called social services came to check May’s chair. The chair is STILL not fixed. She doesn’t have a new one yet either. Of course, I did receive a phone call to update me on the progress – hahaha! As if! “When’s it arriving?” my mother-in-law asked me today. “About six weeks,” I responded. “Ah,” she said wisely, “the magic six weeks.” Everything ordered by the government takes six weeks. Everything. Except they don’t take six weeks. They take six weeks from the last time you...

The Mystery of May’s Supergirl Suit (UPDATED)

I suppose it was inevitable given my uproar. About six months ago, when May was fitted for her new lycra AKA supergirl suit, I was told she would not receive another one if she had growth spurt a few months later. Put aside the lunacy of making a medical decision based on financial constraints and focus instead on my uproar itself. If you had been May’s physio, what would you have done? Making disabled families who are also very poor, poorer. If that wasn’t enough to make a person want to charge Downing Street and literally disable David Cameron, now they are pressing through their National Health Service reforms. Pressing ahead despite most of the NHS begging them not to. Despite most of the professional bodies associated with the NHS criticizing it. Despite patient groups and people like me, on the...

May’s physio has pushed this mama too far.

Today, in our meeting to fit May’s lycra suit, May’s physio said that because May has put on weight and outgrown her suit quickly the last two times, after this suit, if she outgrows it again, she may not get another. “But, she needs it,” I said. She listed budgetary constraints and a difficult manager as the reasons against. “None of those make a difference,” I said pointedly, “If May needs the suit for her development, she must have one. You can’t make a clinical decision based on a budget. If you don’t have the money, you need to look...

Can a child have too much therapy?

Monday – Music Therapy and Speech and Language Therapy Tuesday – nada Wednesday – Physio Thursday – nada Friday – Physio and Hydrotherapy Maybe that doesn’t sound like a lot to you. Maybe you are thinking, “Isn’t Stacie on maternity leave? She can fit that all in.” Or, “An hour or two a day, every other day isn’t much for May.” So also, please consider the monthly visits by May’s community therapists (OT, Physio, SALT)? And Small Steps School? Not to mention each of these people give May and I homework and that...
