Our disabled spot is installed and look who is in it… (Part Two!)

You know the story so far… When I left for work one morning this week, the parking space outside our house was severely lacking. When I returned, literally the paint was still wet and some schmuck was already parked in our disabled parking space. I stood across the street in disbelief. So, of course, I did what any sensible person would. I took a picture. Then, I called my husband.”You will never guess who is parked in our new disabled parking spot. And, it’s not me.” “I’d put a note on the window if I were you,” he said. I didn’t. I found the...

Finally! Our disabled spot is installed and look who is in it…

Who is Lambeth Council kidding? A year and a half to paint a disabled parking space outside our house? What do you need for that? Paint… and, um, nothing else. About three weeks ago, I’d had enough. The coward who emailed me to say he was going on leave, just two hours before it happened, was back. I decided to call him nonstop until I annoyed him so much he’d come out himself to paint those lines. Lambeth have this amazing voicemail system. Either you phone up and hear this message, “This user does not subscribe to voicemail.” Or, you hear this message,...

May’s wheelchair assessment veers off course

A wheelchair is a big step. It means a lot of things and none of them are all that good. I walked into the meeting already feeling pretty miserable. But then, the therapist running the assessment – who I later ascertained was quite a nice person – unfortunately opened up the discussion with this grilling: Do you live in a flat? Ground floor? (They always say this like they are willing it to be true. It’s never “what floor?”) Any steps into the flat? And what is your car like? What’s the make? What kind of car seat do you use? Does May fit into it okay? Is...

How May got me a new car

In two weeks time, we will be the proud owners of a new Ford Mondeo estate. A new car is always very exciting, even more so when you have never owned one. (Not exactly true. My dad got me a Madza 323 hatchback in 1991. My sister totaled it by driving it into a truck. I used the insurance money to pay for my tuition at a London university – and thus the cycle began…) May is three years old. She got us the car and, no, she’s not loaded. The government runs a Motability scheme whereby, for a low deposit (or none at all for some smaller cars), disabled people are given a car on...

I made an elderly woman cry

I made an elderly woman cry

Last weekend, in Wales, May and I took a long walk by the coast. We stopped at the top of a grassy hill, sat on a bench and May bounced on my knee for a while. We were having such a good time, I walked her down the hill to the sea wall, where she could hear the waves crash against the beach. As soon as we were close enough for the sound of the waves to carry up to us, May kicked her legs in ecstatic joy. There began an attempt at a series of photos of us, by me. The combination of her bouncing and my short arms, meant outside of a couple of photos, I only managed to capture shots of...
