May at 10 months old (Never before published post!)

In a bit of end of year housekeeping, I unearthed this post from February 2010. May would only have been 10 months old. Why I didn’t publish it? No idea. It encapsulates so much of what I felt then, perhaps it was too raw. Regardless, I love it because memory is a fickle friend. I always wonder: was it really that bad? And, likewise, was it really that good? How could it have possibly been so good? This post covers all of that. Unedited and raw. 3 Half-Brained Genius Awards

The prestigious Half-Brained Genius Awards are coveted across the globe. (TRUE!) They are not given to the major moments that we read about on the news. (Also TRUE.) Kara wrote a post about their recent visit to London, where they mastered the public...

Last year, this time we were in California with May. What seemed like an ideal Christmas – my family, sunshine, 20 pools within a five minute walk of my bedroom – turned into a nightmare with May jet-lagged and teething. She was in excruciating pain. She wouldn’t eat for over a week. Finally, in week two I turned to that Jewish saviour, Matzoh Ball Soup (sort of chicken broth with a massive dumpling – trust me, if you were Jewish you would get it.) I don’t get to see my family that often, and it was my first Christmas with them for years, a decade maybe. So it...

As if May’s brain injury isn’t enough…

…now she will need major hip surgery. It’s better if I just say it, like that, than draw it out because I can not bear it. I can’t bear the injustice of it all. That May would already be born so severely disabled, and now she must be subjected to major surgery before she is even four years old. She will spend five days in the hospital. Three months without bouncing. I can’t help but return to this idea that I could have done something to prevent it. My husband tells me this is not true – that once she was born, and born as she was, this problem was as inevitable...
